What is the purpose of the eMaps Site?
eMaps provides Mississauga's residents, businesses, and visitors 24/7 online access to maintained, accurate and integrated mapping data through a user friendly Internet Explorer interface.

What are the minimum software/hardware requirements for using the eMaps Site?
eMaps was designed for use with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later. The browser's security settings must allow signed ActiveX controls to download and execute. DirectX Version 9.0c is also required.

eMaps has been tested with Windows XP computers, running Internet Explorer 6.0. It is strongly recommended to run eMaps on a high-speed or broadband connection along with about 512Mb of RAM on the client machine.

The first time you run eMaps you will be prompted to download and install Bentley's Map Viewer ActiveX Add-on Control and required DirectX components. To complete the installation, you must agree to allow the add-on to run at the City of Mississauga's website, and to accept the terms of the Bentley licensing agreement.

Do I need to install anything?
Yes. The first time you visit the eMaps site you will be notified to download and install the Bentley Map Viewer ActiveX Add-on control.

If you did not see the prompt, then you can download it from here: http://www6.mississauga.ca/downloads/MapViewerInstallSFX.exe

  1. Click "Run" if you see the "File Download - Security Warning"
  2. Click "Run" again, if you see the "Internet Explorer - Security Warning" related to "Unknown Publisher"
  3. Click the "Unzip" button, and the installation begins automatically.
  4. Follow the prompts of the installation wizard to complete the setup.
  5. Once the Map Viewer has been installed, it will be recognized by Internet Explorer as a registered control.
  6. Close Internet Explorer and access eMaps again.
  7. You will be prompted to agree to allow the Map Viewer to run at the City of Mississauga's website, as well as to confirm acceptance of Bentley's license agreement. You MUST agree to ACCEPT both of these prompts.
Suggestion: Open the MapViewer Installation Guide, in a new browser window, so that you can refer to it during the installation.

Will eMaps work with Netscape or on my Macintosh Computer?
eMaps has not been tested to work with Netscape and will not work on a Macintosh Computer. eMaps was designed for use with Microsoft Internet Explorer, and only the 32-bit version.

What about Windows XP/Vista/7 64-bit and Internet Explorer 64-bit?

Although Bentley has not certified its Map Viewer add-on to run on Windows XP/Vista/7 64-bit operating systems, the City of Mississauga has been able to successfully run eMaps on these systems, using the default security settings that the City deploys.

However, when using a Windows 64-bit operating system, Internet Explorer 64-bit might be the default version of the browser that you are running, but the Map Viewer is NOT supported on the 64-bit browser. The eMaps pages will notify you of this non-supported condition.

Fortunately, on 64-bit Windows operating systems, you may still have the option of running the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer to view the eMaps pages:
  1. In your Windows Start menu, if you see options to run "Internet Explorer" or "Internet Explorer (32-bit)" or "Internet Explorer (64-bt)", then choose the one that does not have the "(64-bit)" text, so that it will launch and run the 32-bit version.
  2. If you do not see the option in the Windows Start menu, you may be able to locate the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer at the default installation folder:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

I'm having problems viewing the eMaps page.
Are you accessing the Map Viewer page from school or work? Schools and workplaces often use proxy servers and firewalls as security protection. Both proxy servers and firewalls can block access to the page. The program that runs the Map Viewer communicates through specific port numbers, in addition to the standard port 80 used for regular web pages.

First, ensure that an IP rule on your proxy server and firewall is in place to allow the IE session to connect to the eMaps server at: 142.240.200.160. Once access to our server has been provided, then ensure that ports 80, 8081, 8084, 8087 are opened to allow the Map Viewer client to send and receive mapping data/images.

If you are still not seeing the maps, it may be an issue with the Map Viewer ActiveX add-on control. When you first visit the eMaps pages, you will be notified to download and install the control . Once installed, you would be notified to close all IE windows and revisit the eMaps page, and then you would see prompts to allow the add-on to run at the City of Mississauga's website, as well as to confirm acceptance of Bentley's license agreement. You MUST agree to ACCEPT both of these prompts.

To verify that the Map Viewer add-on control is installed (IE 7/8/9):
- Click Tools > Internet Options
- Change to the "Programs" tab
- Click on the "Manage add-ons" button
- Change the option in the left (lower) side to show "All add-ons"
- In the list of add-ons that are displayed, scroll down and look for a section called "Bentley Systems, Incorporated".
- In this section you should see the "MapViewer Class" listed.
- The status should be "Enabled" and the version should be "08.11.07.51" or higher.
- Right click on "MapViewer Class" and choose "More Information".
- Check to see if "mississauga.ca" is in the list below the section called "You have approved this add-on to run on the following websites:"
- If not, then you've probably not been prompted to give permission for the control to run yet. A security setting may be blocking IE from prompting you to allow the control to run.

To verify that the Map Viewer ActiveX control is installed (IE 6):
- Click Internet Options (under the Tools Menu, Internet Explorer
- Click Settings, located under Temporary Internet Files within the General Tab.
- Click View Objects, there should a program file named MapViewer Class.
- Click MapViewer Class (right mouse button) and select Properties.
- Click the Version Tab, version should read 8,5,2,81 (or higher)
- Click Cancel and close the Internet Options windows when finished.

Why do Map Layers appear and disappear as I zoom in or out?
Displaying all Map Layers at certain zoom levels will clutter the Map Viewer window and impede the session’s performance.
